The Power of Balance

At first glance, Jeff and Cathy Moore’s Wyoming home appears perfectly symmetrical.

Carbon-copy burgundy columns and stone pillars flank the front door, and the left and right wings of the house extend in unison from a clear centerline. Once inside the grand foyer, mirror-image staircases and strips of red limestone tile stretch away from a perfectly centered landing.

But in reality, the left side of the house – when facing the front door – is slightly longer.

Some matching columns in the hallway are built-in while others are freestanding, and in the master bathroom, the limestone countertop to the left of the door is slightly longer than its counterpart.

Not that anyone would notice.

“That’s the difference between balance and symmetry,” says architect Rod Sidley.

Refined Country

Julie Woodside and her husband, Frank, enlisted the help of Rod Sidley Architects and Molly Johnson, Classic Hill Ltd. to transform their kitchen into a masterpiece of classic charm and warm beauty. The Woodsides know both talents well from a previous renovation project, and the couple trusts them completely. “Rod knows my tastes, and Molly knows my style,” Julie explains. “I’m a warm, comfortable, cozy person. I like the real, lived-in look.”

The Lake House

Frank Woodside loves to give tours of his family’s lake house, and when you see the before pictures, it’s no surprise why. He and his wife, Julie, turned a relatively modest A-frame cabin into what their contractor calls “a 3,700-square-foot summer extravaganza.” Gorgeous views of the water extend from almost every room, and light streams in from all directions. If you couldn’t see the original A-frame’s outline inside and out, it would be hard to believe this is the same house at all.

Rod Sidley Architects has designed the The Jean Martha Hennegan Environmental Education Center for the new Red Wolf Sanctuary & Raptor Rehabilitation Center.
