The Spragues

The library in the Biltmore Estate outside Asheville, N.C., was on the Spragues' wish list when they first conferred with architect Rod Sidley of Wyoming. "It seemed to fit the age of the house," (1895) says Roberta. "We particularly wanted a library because we had a tremendous number of books — historic and otherwise — stored in a big room on the third floor." "It was inspirational in the fact my clients wanted something out of the ordinary, but we had to make it with stock pieces as we weren't dealing with the Vanderbilts," who built the Biltmore, says Sidley. The two-story addition has office space at one end, a billiard table, spiral staircase and TV. Outside the office windows is a garden railway and lights along the library's spiral staircase are salvaged from train cars. "We even had pocket doors built into the base cabinet so they could put their dog's cage in the 'lost' space above the new basement stair," says Sidley. "The biggest compliment came from the church custodian across the street," Roberta says. "He said, 'It's beginning to look like it's always been there.' That's what we wanted."
